Palanivel Thiagarajan
Palanivel Thiagarajan (PTR) is an Indian politician and the current Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu. He is also a former investment banker and an MIT graduate.
Early life and education
PTR was born on 7 March 1966 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He belongs to a prominent political family. His father, P. T. R. Palanivel Rajan, was a former speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and a minister in the DMK government. His grandfather, P. T. Rajan, was the Chief Minister of Madras Presidency in 1936.
PTR completed his schooling at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, and Vikaasa School, Madurai. He then obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. He went on to pursue higher studies in the United States, where he earned a master’s degree in operations research and a Ph.D. in human factors engineering/engineering psychology from the University at Buffalo. He also completed an MBA in financial management from MIT Sloan School of Management.
Corporate career
PTR started his career as an independent consultant in operations and systems improvement in 1990. He joined Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in 2001 as a trader and co-portfolio manager of the firm relationship loan portfolio. He rose to become the head of offshore capital markets in 2008. He then worked for Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore, in the global capital markets division as a managing director of financial markets sales. He quit his corporate career in 2014 to enter politics in Tamil Nadu.
Political career
PTR joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in 2014 and became the head of its IT wing. He contested and won the Madurai Central assembly constituency in the 2016 and 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. He was appointed as the Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management in May 2021 by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. He released a white paper on Tamil Nadu’s finances after taking charge of the ministry.
